Will the Enterprise Data Warehouse and Operational Data Stores be eliminated? If so, what technologies will be used to replace them so that data can be pulled in a non-interactive manner?

Yes. Ohio State is building a new Reporting and Analytics Environment (RAE) that will replace the existing Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and Operational Data Stores (ODS). The goal of the RAE is to provide a place to create reports and perform analytics with datasets that cross multiple systems (i.e. Workday data, plus data from another system) and/or require historical data that does not reside in Workday.

The RAE will be powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud platform. We will utilize toolsets such as Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR), Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), and Amazon Redshift to ensure the RAE is robust, flexible and prepared to handle current and future data analysis needs. For reporting, exploration and visualization, we will use Tableau Server. More information about how to gain access to Tableau will be released soon.

If your area is extracting data from the EDW and/or ODS for offline data access or for integration into your local systems, please partner with us so that we can better understand your data needs. Please contact Campus Integration Lead Mercedes Counter.

How do we know Amazon Web Services is the right choice? Are there any alternatives?

A lengthy evaluation of cloud-based platforms took place prior to selecting AWS as the tool of choice. AWS offers a variety of components that will allow us to build a powerful data analytics solution. We assessed the expected costs for AWS as a core service during the evaluation process.

Will the university offer training services for the business intelligence and analytics environments?

Yes. We are currently developing training modules and classes to cover all aspects of the new reporting solutions, including Workday Reporting, Workday Worksheets and Tableau, among others.
